Student Awards

Awards open to undergraduate and graduate students of Buddhist studies at UBC: (Prospective applicants should also consult the listings on the Asian Studies Website and UBC’s Award Search)

KHYENTSE Foundation Award for Excellence in Buddhist Studies (all)

Awards totaling $1,000 are offered by the Khyentse Foundation to recognize undergraduate or graduate student achievement in Buddhist Studies, especially expertise in the classical languages of  Buddhist traditions. Awards are made on the recommendation of the Department of Asian Studies and, in the case of graduate students, in consultation with the Faculty of  Graduate Studies.

Bruno PETZOLD Memorial Scholarship in Buddhism and Japanese Studies (all)

A $2,250 scholarship has been endowed by Mrs. Liesel Petzold in honour of her father-in-law, Dr. Bruno Petzold (1873-1949), who served as a professor at Tokyo Daiichi Koto Gakko, the present Tokyo University at Komaba. The scholarship is awarded on the recommendation of the Department of Asian Studies to a student majoring in Japanese or Asian Area Studies who has an interest in Buddhism.

C. K. CHOI Prize in Buddhist Studies (all)

A $650 prize has been endowed by the Choi family for an outstanding graduate or undergraduate student with high standing in Buddhist studies. It is made on the recommendation of the Department of Asian Studies in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate Studies where appropriate.

INTERNATIONAL Buddhist Society Graduate Scholarship (grad)

A $10,000 scholarship is offered by the International Buddhist Society to an outstanding graduate student pursuing a masters or doctoral degree in Buddhism Studies. In the case of two exceptional candidates, two scholarships of $5,000 may be awarded. The award is made on the recommendation of the Department of Asian Studies in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

UNIVERSAL Buddhist Temple Prize (undergraduate)

Five prizes of $200 each have been offered by the Universal Buddhist Temple for the best essays submitted on the topics of Buddhist philosophy, Buddhist history, Buddhist art history, and Buddhism as it relates to contemporary Canadian society (three at the 200-level, and two at the 300- and 400-level). The awards are made on the recommendation of the Department of Religious Studies in consultation with the Departments of Asian Studies and Fine Arts.

UNIVERSAL Buddhist Temple Scholarship (masters)

A scholarship of $1,500 has been offered by the Universal Buddhist Temple to an outstanding masters student in Buddhist studies. No recipient shall receive this scholarship for more than two years. The award is made on the recommendation of the Department of Asian Studies.

UNIVERSAL Buddhist Temple Graduate Scholarship (phd)

A $5,000 scholarship is offered by the Universal Buddhist Temple to an outstanding graduate student pursuing a masters or doctoral degree in Buddhism Studies. No recipient shall receive this scholarship for more than two years. The award is made on the recommendation of the Department of Asian Studies in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
